Australia (officially the Commonwealth of Australia) is a sovereign country, located in Oceania between the Indian Ocean and the South Ocean. With an area of 7,692,024 square kilometres, is the largest country in Oceania and the sixth-largest country in the world. The Australian telephone numbering plan describes the allocation of phone numbers in Australia. According to the current telephone  numbering plan, Australia is divided geographically into four large area codes. Geographical region boundaries do not exactly follow state borders, and some of these geographic region cover more than one state and territory. Currently, area code 08 belongs to state Western Australia, South Australia and Northern Territory.

There are six main types of phone numbers in Australia. The most commonly used types are landline and mobile phone. A geographic number is a telephone number which digit structure is linked to a specific city. Geographic numbers are mainly for local or landline services. They are usually assigned to home and corporate devices. In Australia, fixed line telephone numbers consist of the two digits area code and an eight digits local number.
