Australia (officially the Commonwealth of Australia) is a sovereign country, located in Oceania between the Indian Ocean and the South Ocean. With an area of 7,692,024 square kilometres, is the largest country in Oceania and the sixth-largest country in the world. Australia's population was 25,918,400 people at 2021, equivalent to 0.33% of the world's total population. Australia is divided into six states and three internal territories: South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia, Queensland, and Tasmania. Australia's capital is Canberra, and most populous city is Sydney. A prosperous developed country, Australia is the world's 13th largesteconomy.

Adelaide is the capital city of South Australia, and the largest city in the state.  Founded in 1836, Adelaide has a population of over 1.37 million and is Australia's fifth largest city. Known as Australia's City of Culture, Adelaide is also the business and government centre of South Australia and is home to a number of financial and government agencies.

The Australian telephone numbering plan describes the allocation of phone numbers in Australia. According to the current telephone  numbering plan, Australia is divided geographically into four large area codes. Geographical region boundaries do not exactly follow state borders, and some of these geographic region cover more than one state and territory. Currently, area code 08 belongs to state Western Australia, South Australia and Northern Territory.

There are six main types of phone numbers in Australia. The most commonly used types are landline and mobile phone. A geographic number is a telephone number which digit structure is linked to a specific city. Geographic numbers are mainly for local or landline services. They are usually assigned to home and corporate devices. In Australia, fixed line telephone numbers consist of the two digits area code and an eight digits local number.
